Disarming a Paradox of Validity

چکیده

Any theory of truth must find a way around Curry’s paradox, and there are well-known ways to do so. This paper concerns an apparently analogous paradox, about validity rather than truth, which JC Beall and Julien Murzi (“Two Flavor’s of Curry’s Paradox”) call the v-Curry. They argue that there are reasons to want a common solution to it and the standard Curry paradox, and that this rules out the solutions to the latter offered by most “naive truth theorists”. To this end they recommend a radical solution to both paradoxes, involving a substructural logic, in particular one without structural contraction. In this paper I argue that substructuralism is unnecessary. Diagnosing the “v-Curry” is complicated because of a multiplicity of readings of the principles it relies on. But these principles are not analogous to the principles of naive truth, and taken together there is no reading of them that should have much appeal to anyone who has absorbed the morals of both the ordinary Curry paradox and the Second Incompleteness Theorem.

Vagueness-Adaptive Logic: A Pragmatical Approach to Sorites Paradoxes

This paper defends a pragmatical approach to vagueness. The vaguenessadaptive logic VAL is a good reconstruction of and an excellent instrument for human reasoning processes in which vague predicates are involved. Apart from its proof-theory and semantics, a Sorites-treating model based on it is presented, disarming the paradox. The paper opens perspectives with respect to the construction of t...

There is No Paradox of Logical Validity

A number of arguments, including (Whittle 2004), (Field 2008), (Shapiro 2012), and (Beall & Murzi 2012), have been put forward for the claim that logical validity is plagued by a paradox (or paradoxes) similar to the more well-known paradoxes that afflict notions such as truth, knowledge, or set. These claims are incorrect. As I will show here, there is no paradox of logical validity. In additi...

Bertrand’s Paradox Revisited: More Lessons about that Ambiguous Word, Random

The Bertrand paradox question is: “Consider a unit-radius circle for which the length of a side of an inscribed equilateral triangle equals 3 . Determine the probability that the length of a ‘random’ chord of a unit-radius circle has length greater than 3 .” Bertrand derived three different ‘correct’ answers, the correctness depending on interpretation of the word, random. Here we employ geomet...

The Paradox of Health Policy: Revealing the True Colours of This ‘Chameleon Concept’; Comment on “The Politics and Analytics of Health Policy”

Health policy has been termed a ‘chameleon concept’, referring to its ability to take on different forms of disciplinarity as well as different roles and functions. This paper extends Paton’s analysis by exploring the paradox of health policy as a field of academic inquiry—sitting across many of the boundaries of social science but also marginalised by them. It situates contemporary approaches ...
